Finland’s Opposition Plans Rejecting Nuclear Weapons Transit Bill
Antti Lindtman, head of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP), confirmed this position on Monday during a televised interview with a Finnish public broadcaster.
The proposal, introduced last week by Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen, seeks to lift Finland’s existing legal prohibition on the presence of nuclear weapons within its borders. Officials argue that the adjustment would bring Finnish legislation in line with its obligations as a NATO member, an alliance Finland joined in 2023.
Lindtman emphasized that Finland should treat nuclear weapons with “great restraint and consideration,” pointing to the country’s geographic location and security situation. He also noted that NATO’s nuclear deterrent already offers protection for Finland.
Stretching 1,340 kilometers (832 miles), Finland shares the longest border with Russia among NATO countries. Historically, the Soviet Union waged and won a three-month war against Finland in 1939-1940.
Lindtman stated, “We cannot support such a legal change that takes us away from the Nordic framework,” and added that the government should have engaged parliament more extensively before presenting the measure.
Additionally, two other opposition parties—the Green League and the Left Alliance—have declared their opposition, criticizing the government for deliberating the issue in a restricted circle instead of following Finland’s tradition of wide-ranging consultation on major foreign and security policy matters.
